Maternal–fetal medicine (MFM), also known as perinatology, is a branch of medicine that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy.
Obstetric risk assessment is an important component of comprehensive obstetric care. It is a tool used to evaluate the medical, psychosocial, familial, and environmental factors that increase the chance of an adverse outcome. Such outcomes may involve the mother, the infant, or both.
High-risk conditions in obstetrics refer to situations during pregnancy, labor, or postpartum that pose a greater risk to the health of the mother, the baby, or both. Some of these conditions include: Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia: Characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, often the kidneys. Gestational Diabetes: High blood sugar that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after giving birth. Preterm Labor: Labor that begins before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. Multiple Pregnancies: Carrying more than one fetus (twins, triplets, etc.), which increases the risk of preterm labor and other complications.
Laparoscopy is performed to view and access the exterior of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other structures within the pelvis. Hysteroscopy is performed to view the internal cavity of the uterus, identify abnormalities, and perform certain corrective procedures.
